How to set powerful intentions

In my Facebook community, True Spirituality with Ange, we set intentions at the start of every week. This led one of my members to ask the question: how do you set intentions? And of course, it leads to the another question which is what is the difference between goals and intentions. In this blog post I will set out the differences between goals and intentions and then offer a six step process to set powerful intentions.

The biggest difference between intentions and goals is that goals rely on the belief that you need to do all the leg work and you need to work hard to make the goal happen, whereas intentions are more fluid and flexible and rest on the idea that if you show up for half the work, the Universe will do the rest. Personally, that tips the balance for me in favour of intentions. However, they can be beautifully combined. You can have a goal and an intention of how you are going to reach that goal.

Say you want to expand your reach and welcome two hundred new people into your funnel. You could set that as a goal and attach a time frame to it, but you could set the intention that (i) you want to reach that goal in the funnest possible way and (ii) acknowledge that you might not be the best person to know what you need (there is often a big gap between what we want and what we need) so add the words “or something better” at the end of the goal to allow for the Universe to bring you what you really need rather than what you want.

Personally, I have made it almost my business to set unrealistic goals, which I have failed to reach, which then made me feel like a failure. I was already feeling like a failure, so the existing feeling was strengthened and off I went for another cycle of self flagellation. It’s not fun. And as you can see from the previous paragraph, you can achieve a goal in many different ways: fun, ease, fast, slow, hard, etc. When you are clear on your intentions, you set the tone of how you want to feel along the way.

The other big difference between goals and intentions is that goals are always in the future whereas intentions start right away. You could have a goal to sell three VIP packages. The intention part of the goal would require you to ask the question “Who do I need to be to sell three VIP packages” and the moment this question is asked, your subconscious mind, which loves to get on a job, will show you what needs to change.

Goals deny you other possible outcomes. I cannot tell you the number of times that I was actually relieved that I did not achieve my goals because I was no ready for them. Had they actually happened, I would have crumbled under the weight of the responsibility. I can think of one example when I wished for best seller status for one of my book, when my youngest was still in nappies. How crazy is that? I am glad I can laugh at myself for it now.

Now is time to share with you my six step process to set powerful intentions

Step 1: Identify the desire

Step 2: Get clear on who you need to be for that to happen

Step 3: List actionable steps to get to it

Step 4: Identify and release the fears around that intention

Step 5: Create an affirmation around your intention

Step 6: Call on the Universe for help

I guess there is a step 7 which is to start to take action.

Voila. My process to set powerful intentions. If you have liked this blog post, please share with someone you think might like it too. Or comment below so that it gets more traction.
